Strainer Design & Fabrication

  • Steam loss through leaking traps, bypass valve and failed-open trap Strainers are a type of pipe fitting where liquid passes through for removal of solids. Its purpose is to protect critical equipment such as:

  • Pumps
  • Heat exchangers

  • Regulators

  • Steam traps
  • Other pipingitems
Strainers can also be used to ensure clean raw materials. It prevents the contamination of products or even removal of solid finished products from the process.

Y-TYPE STRAINER

Standard sizes from 1/2” to 16”
Economical
Equipped with blow off valve for flushing
Can install horizontally or vertically
Flanged, Buttweld, RTJ, Socket Weld, Threaded connections are available
Standard Materials: Cast Iron, Carbon Steel, SS304, SS316 are standard
materials. Other materials available upon request

  • These filters are more expensive than basic strainer filter, therefore it makes sense to clean and reuse
  • Methods to clean

1) Spray with Water Jet (Back Flush)

2) Ultrasonic

3) Hot Sand Bath

Slight decrease in contaminant capacity results after each cleaning. Close inspection of the screens, for any damage, is key to maintaining proper filtration and performance of the filter.

USE ANY CLEANER/DEGREASER AS RECOMMENDED BY THE SPECIFIC

ULTRASONIC CLEANING APPARATUS.

NOTE: Ultrasonic cleaning is highly recommended for filters having a micron rating of 40 microns or smaller.

Cleaning using Hot Sand 

The strainer element (typically metal) is buried or suspended in a bed of hot sand, which is heated to around 400–600 °C. The heat burns off oil, grease, and polymer residues.

Advantages:

  • Excellent for burning off heavy organic or polymer fouling (e.g. in plastic, paint, resin, or oil applications).
  • Can handle thick carbonized deposits that would be hard to remove chemically.
  • No need for solvents or chemicals.

Limitations:

  • Only suitable for metallic elements (e.g. stainless steel).
  • Can oxidize or warp fine mesh screens if temperature is too high.
  • Does not remove inorganic scales or mineral deposits.
  • Needs careful control — overheating can damage the mesh or cause grain growth.

Final Notes​

  • All filter elements have a lifespan. 
  • Whichever method of cleaing can not remove 100% of all debris
  • After many rounds of cleaning, the filter element will become permanently choked and it will be time to replace 
  • In general, we recommend to clean the filter element when the pressure drop reaches 0.1 – 0.2 bar. Allowing the pressure drop to exceed this may risk the containments becoming permanently stuck in the filter element.
