Pressure Reducing Valve / Pressure Regulating Valve

What is a pressure reducing valve? How does it work? In this article we will talk about its basics.

Also known as Pressure Regulating Valve, help to maintain the downstream pressure at a fixed set point. It allows the medium to flow through it until the set pressure is reached. It will then throttle the flow to maintain the downstream pressure.

Applications

  • To protect downstream equipment from high upstream pressure
  • To regulate the downstream pressure at a fixed point and prevents fluctuations
  • To step down the upstream pressure to the required level suitable for the process

    Direct Acting

    Principle of direct pressure regulator

    Direct Acting is the simpler of the two designs. It works by responding directly to changes in downstream pressure to maintain the necessary flow.

    When the outlet pressure increases, the spring compresses and the plug closes to restrict fluid flow. This allows it to maintain the downstream pressure automatically

    Materials: Ductile Iron/ Gunmetal/ Stainless Steel
    Max Inlet Pressure: Up to 40 bar
    Application: Air, Steam, Gases, Water, Oil & Liquids
    Installation
    The valve can be installed vertically or horizontally. It is recommended to have a downsection of at least 5 X pipe diameter. Pressure gauges can be also mounted as a option.

    Pilot Operated Pressure Reducing Valve

    The advantage of the pilot operated reducing valve is that the pressure sensing point can be placed further downstream for a more accurate pressure sensing. It is also more responsive to changes in pressure.
    Pilot operated valve work by making use of the fluid medium to open and close the plug.
