Y strainer is named because it is designed in the shape of a y. It is a cost effective strainers that can be installed vertically or horizontally. They can be fitted with a ball valve to flush debris without interrupting the process. Because of its design, Y strainers can handle high pressures and are commonly used in pressured lines.
Installation of Y strainer
For steam / gas applications, a y strainer should be installed such that the pocket is in the horizontal plane. This prevents condensate from collecting in the filter pocket which can cause heat loss and erosion.
For liquid applications, the pocket should point vertically downwards. This ensures that the debris does not flow back upsteam, during low flow conditions.
