Boiler Blowdown Valves

What is the difference between continuous and intermittent blowdown?

Boiler blowdown is the process of taking out concentrated dissolved solids from boiler water so that scaling and carryover don’t happen [3]. There are two main ways:

1. Continuous Blowdown

  • Process: A control valve located downstream of a tapping point usually lets a steady, controlled flow of water out of the boiler drum.
  • Benefit: It keeps the water chemistry (Total Dissolved Solids) at its best level of efficiency. It makes energy use much more efficient when used with a heat recovery system [4].
  • Use: Great for big boilers that run all the time in industries like food and beverage or paper making.

2. Blowdown at Intervals (Bottom)

  • Process: This is done every so often to get rid of sludge and sediment that has settled at the bottom of the boiler.
  • Benefit: Stops the buildup of “mud drum” and keeps the heat transfer surfaces clean [3].
  • Use: Necessary for all types of boilers, done by hand or with automated sequenced valves.

How to Pick the Right Blowdown Valve

Choosing the right type of valve is important for safety and dependability [5]. Some common setups are:

  • Quick-Opening Valves: These are often used for short bursts of bottom blowdown. They need to be fully open to stop wire drawing (the seat eroding) [6].
  • Angle Needle Valves: Best for continuous blowdown. They let you fine-tune things so you can control flow rates exactly.
  • Ball Valves: Used when a tight shut-off is needed.
  • Automated Blowdown Systems: These systems are becoming more popular for compliance. They use conductivity probes to blow down only when necessary, which reduces heat and water loss [4].

Note: In Singapore, safety rules often call for two slow-opening valves to be set up in a certain way in series for bottom blowdown to stop water hammer .

Common Mistakes When Sizing and Installing

The most common mistake we help clients fix is using the wrong size valve [2].

  • Mistake 1: Making things too big. If the valve is too big, you can’t control continuous blowdown very well. A small turn causes a huge drop in pressure and loss of water [6].
  • Mistake 2: Undersizing for Intermittent Blowdown. A valve that is too small can’t create enough turbulence to lift and remove sludge that has settled [5].
  • Mistake 3: Not paying attention to pressure ratings. The pressure in the boiler changes. To avoid a catastrophic failure, the valves must match the boiler’s Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) [7].

How Proper Blowdown Keeps Boilers and Steam Traps Safe

Not only does correct blowdown protect your boiler, but it also protects your whole steam system [8]:

  • Prevents Tube Failure: Scale keeps things from getting too hot. You can stop tubes from getting too hot and breaking by taking out the hardness salts before they bake onto the tubes [3].
  • Increases the Life of the Steam Trap: When boiler water with high TDS foams into the steam line, it carries abrasive solids. This breaks the insides of the steam trap and makes the valves leak [8].
  • Stops Corrosion: Taking out dissolved gases and corrosive compounds protects the inside of the boiler and the pipes that come after it [4].
